Project Description

About

Kevin Mooney is an artist based in Sample Studios Cork. He studied painting at the Crawford College of Art and Design (1994-97) and received an MFA from the National College of Art and Design in 2012.

Informed by mythology, history and cultural migration, his work explores a speculative art history of the Irish diaspora. Mooney has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally, including a solo exhibition, Revenants, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in 2022.

Since 2012, he has received several Visual Arts Bursaries from the Arts Council. His work is held in various private and public collections in Ireland and abroad, including Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, the Arts Council of Ireland, the OPW and Galway City Council. His solo exhibition, The Erlish Tide, the Excel Gallery, Tipperary, 2021, was supported by an Arts Council Commissions Award.

“Mooney’s work points to the highly selective character of some histories and proposes an urgent reimagining of their possibilities.”
