Project Description
About
Born in Rotterdam in 1945, Netherlands, Marcelle Hanselaar is currently based in London. Although she studied briefly at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, Hanselaar is a mostly self-taught artist whose work often explores the hidden desires and suppressed impulses of civil society.
Hanselaar’s paintings and prints have been exhibited at and form part of the collections of many important public institutions and museums around the world, including the British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Whitworth Art Museum, Manchester; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, England;, Kunstcollectie Gemeente Haaksbergen, Netherlands; University of Cambridge, England; University of Aberystwyth, Wales; University of Arizona, USA; Sakimi Art Museum, Japan; Guangdong Fine Art Museum, China.
“In the darkly wondrous worlds of Marcelle Hanselaar, the drama of human existence – with its pathos and absurdity, its terrors and passions – is staged with an intensity and fringed with a mystery that propels it towards the sphere of the mythic. Primal dimensions of the human condition – desire, mourning, fear, solitude, belief – are refracted through the dynamics between self and other, individual and socius, dream and the waking state. Beyond definite time or place, these suspended image realms conjure states of being that transcend cultures and epochs.” Kamini Vellodi
